What area is the Utah Highlands Neighborhood/Who is invited? It is predominantly the Utah Highlands subdivision of Ivory Homes. However, if you live directly north between 3200 North and the Ivory Homes and between 600 East and 1200 East, you are still welcome to come and participate or if you know a lot of us and just want to come, that's good too!
What do the donations cover? This party costs probably close to $1,500-2,000 to pull off! Your donations help pay for fireworks, bounce house rentals and the Cotton Candy machine and supplies and popcorn. What doesn't get paid for by your monetary donations: some of the fireworks, the drinks, ice, plates, utensils and HOURS of volunteer time to pull this event off! The band members donate their time and talent and the sound guy donates his time and equipment - in exchange for dinner! :) HUGE THANKS goes out to these guys and all of our helpers!
Are family and friends from outside the neighborhood welcome? Sure. Just make sure that each family cares for our neighborhood (especially the yards we are in) the way we do, cleans up after themselves and contributes to the cause so we can continue to enjoy the party and use the yards we use! Remember, every family is asked to bring a BIG potluck or two, their own meat and donations of $10-20 per family are requested in advance so we can cover all costs.
What's the history of the block party? This is the 9th year our neighborhood/block party has been hosted! We started at Thanksgiving time in 2000 - at the Lindseys with pies to share, but it got too big to do inside so in 2001 we moved it to our backyard in September, I believe! That got too big too, so we moved it to the street and to July!! What better way to celebrate our great country! 675 East is closed that evening from Utah Highlands/2600 North to 2800 North.
Who hosts the block party? Although the Lindseys started the party, it is definitely a GROUP effort now and even ran in 2007 without the Lindseys help! As it has grown, more and more people have become involved and we couldn't do it without all of the help and support! Thanks to everyone who has helped these past several years to make it so much fun for everyone! This year, the big thanks goes to Hansons, Walkers, Taylors, Bowens and Chilcotes for their help. And always thanks goes to those families whose yards we sit in, play games in and clutter with our trash!! Hopefully everyone will treat the yard kindly and be aware of their trash and take care of the flowerbeds (keep kids out of them and watch for sprinkler heads).
Who is the live band? Flash Point is the name of the band. They do cover tunes from the 70's to modern, with emphasis on Rock and the 80's. They love when you dance and get into the music so plan to "get down" and "boogy". It makes it much more fun for them! The band members are:
Jason Stilson of Nephi on guitar, keyboards and vocals
Shane Memmott of Nephi on bass guitar and vocals
Iann Murray of Spanish Fork - lead guitar and backup vocals
Steve Lindsey of our neighborhood, Lehi - drummer and vocals
Jason and Shane have played together in bands since 1986. They met Steve in 2006 and played as a 3 piece band until Iann joined the band in 2008. Steve and Iann have both played in other bands for many years as well. They currently play gigs at local clubs and bars as well as private parties and are looking forward to a benefit concert at the Gallivan Center in SLC in September. To contact the band or find out when/where their next gig is, contact flashpointmusic@live.com or join the "Flash Point Music" group on Facebook.com
